GNAR Inc.

Edgar Dearden had a dream - to create amazing designs and sustainable homes on the beautiful west coast of Canada. Five years ago he started GNAR in scenic Whistler, BC, and he has not looked back. In the years since, GNAR has continued to drive innovation in an industry that has become all too static.

But the path to success is not always smooth and flat. For the design team at GNAR it is literally quite the contrary. The mountain terrain and climate so admired by locals and visitors present unique challenges to the building industry. The steep and rugged landscape calls for an agile design approach. And each year it is a race to “get the roof on” before punishing snow loads arrive.

So what has guided GNAR’s continuing success? It is simple; a strong and unwavering adherence to the principles of Sustainability and Constructible BIM. The team at GNAR holds to their principles and leverages the best technology to get the projects done.

SUSTAINABILITY

“Sustainability is woven into the fabric of everything we do. When 39% of the world’s carbon emissions are from construction and buildings, we feel an obligation to do better,” says Edgar.

Each project is guided by Passive House design concepts. The goal is to build healthy buildings that allow for long term cost and energy saving. “A commitment to sustainable building is not something we take lightly. It is an amazing privilege to preserve the environment we live in.”

CONSTRUCTIBLE BIM

GNAR has always leveraged 3D design technology. “Before starting the business I envisioned our future design process and then went looking for a BIM software that could power it. That search brought us to Archicad. With it we create 3D models that are fully coordinated and constructible with very little need for additional detailing.

Archicad is the engine that drives everything we do from agile design to sustainability. Without Archicad we simply could not keep up,” according to Edgar.
